Thumbs down Dinty Moore """Beef Stew"""" is more like: hamburger soup.

I recently bought two cans of the stuff (before I realized it was made by Hormel (hell foods) and tried eating that garbage. It used to be good-but no longer is. I don't know who the jerk is who forced a change in their recipe? but--I'm completely done with ANY product they have except for an occasional SPAM. I am seriously thinking of suing them for false advertisement-the photo on the can shows large chunks of meat with the stew--no longer the case-at least with the two cans I bought. I MIGHT buy another can and see if there are actual meat chunks and actual gravy in it-instead of the terrible-tasting soup-like carp I got stuck with. Anyway, if that idiot who forced the corner-cutting STUPID change to what used to be a good tasting stew-is reading this? YOU, have one more shot with me-before you lose a long time loyal customer. However--ill never buy yer darned tamales again-as you ruined those years ago.

While I'm at it, I noticed that Wolf brand chili--did the same. It no longer is chili-but fragging SOUP!!!!!!!!!

IS there any alternates out there?? I don't cook from scratch chili or stews due to lack of time, energy and space.

No surprise, really.

They want to keep the cost the same so the consumer doesn't ditch them. So as food prices rise, they simply add more and more water to the product. Trust me, I've noticed it to.

The REAL shame is that fresh beef and fresh vegetables are so expensive. I never understood how these companies can buy apparently at least some fresh meat and vegetables, can them, cook and season them, transport them all around the country, and sell them to me and you for a buck. To make the real thing yourself at home would cost $30 or better, and would not make 30 cans worth of soup, not even close.

It's a racket. These companies feed us their chemical and preservative ridden watered down mystery soup and it ends up being much more expensive to just cook your own fresh healthy soup... I really do not understand this country sometimes, what went wrong.

I agree, and also forgot to add--its also mostly potato too-very tiny bits of carrots in that thin soupy-like substance. I remember when their stew also had corn and celery in it too-but that's been over ten years now since those disappeared.

I can remember the last time I had some, but not when it was (30 years or more I bet), and it was nothing great then. In fact, my description of it would likely get me some moderator hatemail, so I'll pass on that.

I remember when it had good sized chunks of beef in it, but can't say that I've bought it recently. Never really cared for it back then, so I'll pass in the future.
I remember eating a lot of Hamburger Helper in the past and when tried recently, wasn't too fond of it, either, anymore. No matter which type you got, they all have that processed "whang" to them.
Thanks for the heads up!

I have not seen Franco American spaghetti on the shelves for several decades. Funny, I remember it well, because it was what my wife craved during pregnancy...... (That was VERY good luck.) Went looking for some quite a while back and the brand seems to have vanished (or is not distributed in my area, anyway).

Kind of surprised that they still make the stuff. I used to eat that stuff now and then when I was in a hurry and on my own and too hungry to get anything else goin'. It was alright with bread or rolls or cornbread. I'm sorry but not surprised to learn that it has lost some quality though.

I used to like Sweet Sue's Chicken and dumplin's too. Do they still make that? Has it gone to pot as well? Just wonderin'...

Ringo:
You, like I, are a victim of the times. I don't know if the Bob Evans food lines are available in your area, but they are a lifesaver, to my wife, and I. We are "Old Poops", and don't want to cook large portions of food, so we rely on the great, ready prepared, food offerings of Bob Evans. The Kroger stores in our area, carry a large offering of their products. The young folks on TV have changed most all of the old established cooking methods familiar to us. Such as making a joke of the Old Time fruit cakes, that take us a full year to prepare. another gripe that I have with today's cooking, is, that anything baked, be it crackers bread, or biscuits, has to be baked until it is almost burned dark brown. Well, enough of my griping. Hope this helps.

Well my luck wasn't so good. My wife craved fried chicken and beer during her pregnancy. Made countless runs for Kentucky Fried Chicken and and Miller Beer.

I also had a little fling with Chef Boyardee Ravioli. Not too bad.

Yes - Sweet Sue's is out there. Bought a couple of cans for my last camping trip. (Never had it before but was attracted by the label.) Bland as hell and the chicken was small pressed chunks and mostly dumplings. Can't recommend it.

Dinty Moore was barely edible when I was a kid heating it over a campfire. Ditto canned ravioli, spaghetti o's and canned tamales.

Over the last 55 years, all that stuff seems to have sunk to the level of canned calories: it will sustain life if it can be consumed with enough hot sauce to disable the taste buds.

Pretty grim stuff.

I have good memories of eating Dinty Moore during hunting trips and camping.

It used to be good, darn shame if they changed the recipe.

Aside from soups, canned peas and albacore tuna there's very little I'll buy in a can anymore. It has degenerated into the slop Ringo describes above.

Hey Ringo, my wife buys the Bear Creek brand soups from the local Dollar Store. Mostly creamy potato types but they have much more variety where adding some chicken or stew beef would work.
I've alson seen the brand in Walgreen's, Wal Mart and some other stores.
Try it, you'll like it...

My brother, this excuse is lame. You can do this better than any industrial food company with a one-burner hot plate and a small 4 or 6-quart slow cooker.

Get 2 pounds of chuck roast, well trimmed, and cut it into 2-inch cubes. Salt and pepper them well. Brown the meat over medium high heat in a little olive or canola oil several pieces at a time. You just want to brown the surface of the meat on all sides, not cook it all the way through. This might take five minutes per batch. Do the whole two pounds and put the meat aside.

Get five or six carrots and cut them into rounds a half inch thick. Two or three yellow onions cut into 1/16ths. Six or seven celery stalks (green part only) cut into 1/2 - 1 inch pieces. Two medium Russet potatoes cut into half-inch cubes. Wash them well, but leave the skins on.

Take the meat and the vegetables and put them in the slow cooker. Cover the pieces with a 32 ounce container of Swanson's low sodium beef broth. You may need part of a second container depending on how many veggies you included.

Put the slow cooker on Low and let it go 6 to 8 hours. Get some chewy thick peasant style bread, a little butter if you like that, and a large bowl and spoon, and enjoy.

You'll never settle for the canned poison again. I promise.

Ringo, If you got time to bake you have time to cook simple meals.

I can make a chili or spaghetti in an hour or so. I freeze the rest in meal sized containers for when I feel like it again.

Trust me. If you learn to do so and take a pot to work those ladies there are gonna fight for you.

Thankfully my wife still cooks our soups/chili's and 95% of all we eat. Thankful again I don't have to eat that high priced, cheap made, watered-salted down junk they now pass off as food.

I buy cans of high quality vegetarian chili at a whole food co-op, and brown my own low fat ground beef. Add chili and heat. Extra onions and chilis optional. I just chop, and brown with the hamburger.

An alternate to a slow cooker is to use an oven set on about 225 F. Get everything good and hot on the stove top in a pot or Dutch oven, cover and put in oven for several hours, same as slow cooker. The heat is even all around, and works the same way. I don't have a slow cooker because I do all my cooking at home. Works well for all soups, stews and sauces.

Best,
Rick

I used to eat Austex beef stew. I would add a couple spices to it and put it over linguine. Too much salt and calories for me these days, like most canned foods.

I gave up on Hormel products many years ago. Just not to my taste.

I am EXTREMELY upset to learn from you that Wolf brand chili has been watered down. It was a staple of our pantry for many years, although we have not bought any recently. It was perfect for Coney Island chili dogs, also. There was a house brand that tasted nearly the same with the same texture, but I can't remember what it was, and we don't have any currently (I checked).

The only constant is change. That is why Smith puts those holes in the sides of most of their current revolvers, and I will

NOT comment further on that.

Default Dinty Moore

Dinty Moore used to be one of the more decent canned beef stews, but nothing is what it used to be. Even 40 years ago Poss was GROSS.

If anybody wants to get some home made chili, at least for a day, go to the web site for the International Chili Society and locate a cookoff in your area. One of the main rules for the competition is that everything must be prepared at the site, so you can see what ingredients go into a particular batch of chili, and then go back to sample it. The cooks are there to win prizes and advance to the next level of competition, so they are going to try to make the best chili they can. I have been a competitive cook for better than 15 years and I can tell you the cooks take their chili seriously. In the picture you can see a fresh roast being cubed and it will be browned up in the #14 Griswold cast iron skillet on the table.

Years ago on my first trip to the local Aldi's, I bought a can of "stew".

As a matter of course, I add a lot of pepper to soups, stews, etc. I was surprised to discover that, even with my usual generous portion of pepper, it was virtually tasteless.

So I added more pepper. It was still bland enough to make an Englishman gag.

I added Tabasco, and several other things. It was still like boiled typing paper.

I finally added a good teaspoon of Dave's Insanity Sauce. All I achieved was to make it too hot to eat, without giving it ANY taste at all. I think I was unemployed at the time and was loathe to waste money. I still threw it out.

Now that the local Big Lots closed, I no longer have a source for Wolf's chili with beans. Giant Eagle for some unaccountable reason stopped carrying the Wolf with beans. I won't even consider the chili without beans. And no, I'm not adding beans, or anything else for that matter. I buy canned chili so that I DON'T have to "cook".

Check out the brick chili, usually by the hot dog section in the meat case. Be aware that it is pretty pricey.

Any canned "main course" food really sounds foul and probably tastes no better. Most are loaded with salt.

As described in a previous post, it's not that difficult or time-consuming to prepare much better and healthier meals even for someone that doesn't cook regularly. Many dishes, like chili, are suitable for freezing. Others, such as stew, don't do well frozen because potatoes will lose texture.

With one of the very small crock pots available today, a two-serving quantity of beef stew can be made easily with a minimal amount of ingredients and no waste. Aside from several hours cooking time in the crock pot, the time required for slicing vegetables and trimming /browning meat is probably no more than about fifteen to twenty minutes.

Anybody that expects a good dinner from a can has set his expectations way too high. Anybody with an ounce of self respect and common sense can whip up a simple stew and freeze leftovers to feast on another day. Grown men...Dinty Moor, Spaghetti-O's....please.

Ok I too suffer from the shortcuts these companies are taking and the serious bad attitudes of most places where you get poor service and attitudes today all that said was to say this .Texas Pete the same today and yesterday and Morton salt and I love all the sauer spices ,my wife laughed when she saw my spice rack I said yea but with enough of this stuff I can eat an old boot if I have to , I didn't know at the time I might actually end up eating old boots the bad thing is the dog and cat food companies are putting more meat and better vegetables in their products read the labels of some of the newer high end brands .Thinking of trying it with salt n pepper and Texas Pete it all tastes the same anyway ,but spam now it tastes the same to me I hope they don't change I know it's not good for ya but remember how bad sugar was for ya now look at the new Pepsi commercials they are advertising good old sugar as there natural sweetener lol .Seriously though I have a friend who makes large pots of soups a stews that are really tasty and he and his wife raise the meat and vegetables themselves they and there families will sell to certain customers canned ( read mason jars ) meats soups stews and give you credit back if you return the jars unbroken or cracked ,they supplement their family income with this ,so find someone local or someone who has such a contact my friends are Mormons but you don't have to be a member of their religion to be a customer and I must admit their work ethic is admirable and their young people are very polite and clean none of them look like they just got out of prison or are trying their best to get in .I would also like to add that there are other religions that teach their families how to live a more family oriented lifestyle it's just my friend happens to be LDS not knocking anyone else or anything like that .

It's definitely a serious tool. That particular skillet will hold 3 pounds of cubed beef, 3 chopped onions and 3 chopped peppers. Makes it easy to brown up everything together.

Because they're buying tons and you only buy a pound or two! Order 10 tons of beef and you'll probably get the same price

If I'm eating a meal out of a can or a box from the frozen food sectionI better be sitting in a fox hole with my rifle or there is a zombie apocalypse.

It's quicker and easier to make your own food. You can go all crazy or keep it simple. Steak/chops and backed potato takes 5 min. Chilli just has to simmer for a long time but there no physical labor involved

"You, like I, are a victim of the times. I don't know if the Bob Evans food lines are available in your area, but they are a lifesaver, to my wife, and I. We are "Old Poops", and don't want to cook large portions of food, so we rely on the great, ready prepared, food offerings of Bob Evans. The Kroger stores in our area, carry a large offering of their products."

Post Foods (Post cereals) has bought out the prepared food business of Bob Evans Farms, effective early this year. It might be interesting to see if the Bob Evans quality holds up. Bob Evans restaurants were sold off last year to an investor group, so essentially all that will remain of Bob Evans is the name.

Wal Mart sells a frozen pack of all the ingredients for beef stew. Just pour everything into a crock pot, add water, plug it in, and let it cook overnight. A little expensive, but very good stuff.

Ah yes... Dinty Moore beef stew, the food of choice for countless young scouts and budding outdoors men.
We used to cook it in the can set right in the fire. With the top opened of course, else it tended to blow up. It was something of a rite of passage. In my scout troop you hadn't "seen the elephant" if you never blew up a can of stew or baked beans.
I'm not so sure if Hormel changed any of the ingredients or if our tastes haven't changed with the passing years and acquired wisdom.
Thinking back, it tasted OK because we were famished and had no other alternative or common sense. It's also quite possible that fire ash added to it's flavor and digestibility.
Dinty Moore beef stew hasn't been on my list of must haves for nearly half a century, but it does remain a fond memory of the blissful ignorance of my youth.

It is for ME.

I'm not a cook.

In fact, I HATE cooking.

I would rather do my taxes than cook.

The fact that I live in a PIT with an AWFUL kitchen doesn't make me want to cook one bit more.

I build EVERY one of my PCs. I find it trivially easy. I don't assume that it's going to be easier or produce a better result for EVERYBODY than going out and buying some garbage Dell computer.

So far their food has seemed to hold up reasonably while.

It's quicker and easier to make your own food.

Not in any universe I've ever inhabited.

NOTHING heated is going to be easier OR quicker than canned chili or soup in a bowl in the microwave. That's simple mechanics.

And no, I'm not going to waste my one normal day off cooking.

Behind the front seat of my Dodge pickup I have an old wooden dynamite box where I keep a skillet, coffee pot, small camp axe, and some canned goods in case I'm caught up the canyon or if I'm somewhere out in the hinterland and I need to prepare a little something to eat.

If I remember correctly, there's a can of Dinty Moore beef stew in that box. I don't know how old the thing is, but I think I put it there because I remembered that Dinty Moore stew was one of the better ones on the market at the time.

Ringo, you've now given me second thoughts. Like I said, that old dynamite box is there in case of emergency, but now I'm wondering if I want to eat that stuff even then.

It seems to me as though the Armor corned beef hash changes recipes periodically, since cooking time and heat seems to vary noticeably.

I get a feel for how to fry it perfectly, then doing EXACTLY the same thing a few months later, it's either burned or has no crust.

I'm about to try again...

I always thought it resembled dog food.

I think the expensive stuff my wife buys for our dogs looks about as appetizing, and probably costs more.
